    RHAMNUS

    Commonly known as Buckthorn

    Genus of about 160 species of usually thorny, deciduous or evergreen shrubs and trees, widely distributed in northern temperate regions with a few in the southern hemisphere.

    They occur in woodland, heathland, scrub, fens, bogs or rocky places, often on alkaline soils.

    The native, R. cathartica, Purging Buckthorn is found in England and Wales and is the food plant of the Brimstone butterfly.
