CHAMAECYPARIS
Commonly known as False cypress
Cypresses have 5 species giving rise to numerous cultivars, many dwarf or slow-growing and suitable for rock gardens or bonsai.
The scented wood is used for coffins and temple construction in Japan and C. lawsoniana (Port Orford cedar) is also a favoured timber for guitar soundboards. This species is seriously threatened by Phytophthora lateralis, an introduced pathogen, which invades the roots.
