Deciduous - late flowering. Flowers on current year's shoots
Red - crimson with red-brown anthers
Height - 2-3m (6½-10ft)
Spread - 1m (39in)
Climber - Some of these climbing plants will need trellis or wire supports if grown on walls or fences. Other grow aerial roots and are self-clinging - late, large-flowered climber
Hardy - very cold winter - Hardy in all of UK and northern Europe. Plant can possibly withstand temperatures down to -20°C (-4°F)
Full sun - shade roots and base.
Additional Features - Good to know - - prune back previous year's shoots to a pair of strong buds about 15-20cm (6-8in) above soil level before growth begins in early spring.
Pests & Diseases - cutworms, aphids on young plants, clematis wilt.
Place of origin - garden origin (France).
Flower Shape - Single - Row of petals round conspicuous stamens - no more than 8 petals - 4- to 6-sepalled flowers 10cm (4in) across

Suitable for: Deciduous shrubs and trees that flower in Spring or early Summer on previous year's growth, including plants that produce new growth at or near ground level.
Pruning: Prune flowered shoots to strong buds. Cut back approximately 1/4 of old shoots to the base to promote replacement growth.
When: Annually, after flowering.
