    Available late spring to early summer 2026 - Spring according to the Met Office is defined as March 1st - May 31st. Therefore late spring is mid-April onwards. This is not a guaranteed date but an estimate and subject to availability.

      Soil should be open enough to prevent stagnation and rot in winter. Less likely to be monocarpic (dying after first flowering) if flowering is prevented until several crowns have formed
    • Pests & Diseases
      Slugs, snails, downy mildew.
    • Place of origin
      Tibet, southwestern China, Burma. Discovered by French missionary Jean Marie Delavay. First viable seed brought back to UK by Frank Kingdon-Ward (1885-1958) in 1924.

      Oblong to oval, toothed, light bluish-green leaves 15-30cm (6-12in) long, heart-shaped at the base.
    • Blue
      Or purple with yellow stamens.

      8-10cm (3-4in) across.

    • Herbaceous
      Early in the year, typically January till end of March, herbaceous plants might be supplied in 9cm pots to ensure timely despatch.
