      Syn. Q. pedunculata. Wildlife plant. Almost a complete ecosystem. Supports over 280 insect species and a large variety of birds. With Q. petraea (Sessile oak), the 2 native oaks.

      short-stalked, dark green leaves to 14cm (5.5in) long. Leaves have rounded lobes, each base with 2 small ear-like lobes.

      Rugged, spreading tree with fissured, grey-brown bark. Ovoid acorns singly or in clusters.
