I was delighted to receive recently from you the above plant. It seems in good health and I look forward to pointing it out to visitors on the days my garden is open for charity.
I like looking into the background of unusual plants and the Platycrater was no exception. I thought you might be interested in what I found out with the help of some friends. My start point is the reference work Flora of China where the plant is defined in biological detail. It was here that I found its name in Chinese is Zhu Wang E. My contact in Hong Kong tells me that the literal translation is Spider Web calyx which seems an apt description. Whilst the leaves are sometimes used for making a tea, as are teas from the leaves of other shrubs, I cannot find it named Tea of Heaven. I think that description is for Hydrangea serrata.
